SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DEFICITS

Common Speech and Language deficits/disorders

ARTICULATION DISORDERS

Incorrect production of speech sounds due to difficulty with discrimination, placement, timing, direction and speed of the lips, tongue, jaw and airflow.

RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE DEFICITS

Occurs when a person has difficulties with understanding what is said to them. The symptoms vary between children but, generally, problems with language comprehension begin before the age of three years. Children need to understand spoken language before they can use language to express themselves.

EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE DEFICITS

Characterized by difficulty using words to communicate needs and ideas. Children who have this disorder may leave words out of sentences, mix up word tense, and repeat phrases or parts of sentences. It can lead to problems in social settings and at school.

FLUENCY (STUTTERING / CLUTTERING)

When a person has a fluency disorder it means the person has trouble speaking in a fluid, or flowing, way. The person may say the whole word or parts of the word more than once, or pause awkwardly between words. This is known as stuttering. The person may speak fast and jam words together, or say "uh" often. This is called cluttering.

PRAGMATICS (AUTISM)

Characterized by difficulties with the use of verbal and nonverbal language for social purposes. Including: changing communication to match context and listener; understanding ambiguous, nonliteral, or unspoken communication.
